No matter what we are going through, good times or bad, a child of the King must read, meditate upon, and apply the word of God. He has given us his word to instruct us, teach us, and guide us. He has given us his word to light our way! His words give us life! They are food for the soul! I pray that these scriptures will be a blessing to everyone reading!
There are no words to describe what is happening to me right at this moment. In the midst of what should be one of the most painful episodes in my life, I feel like I could float away… like I’m walking on air. I say “I feel like” because those are the only words I have to describe it. But God’s peace is more than just a feeling. It’s something that permeates every part of your being. It’s an actual event that is taking place. It’s a sign that almighty God is at work inside of us.
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.”
“Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”
I don’t claim to know exactly what the future holds for coal or offshore oil and gas related stocks. I just know how God has led me, and I trust him. It’s that simple. He’s been way too good to me for me to stop trusting him now. He has always proven faithful to me and he can absolutely be taken at his word!
I still believe that God is going to bless my work. At times, it is extremely difficult to continue believing that. As the Psalmist says, “My eyes fail, looking for your salvation, looking for your righteous promise.” It might help to clarify that I’m not investing and writing as a hobby. My family member’s retirement and my livelihood are all wrapped up in these investments. I don’t have anything else to fall back on. Nothing. I couldn’t find work in fast food places and grocery stores or anywhere else when I tried. I spent about a year trying to make real estate investments. Nothing worked out. We did a lot of work and put in a lot of bids, but nothing worked out. God closed every single door except for having this website, writing on Seeking Alpha, and putting this portfolio in my hands to manage.
I know this sounds crazy to some people, but that’s okay. As I’ve said many times, faith seems crazy to us humans. We look around the world and everything we can see seems so ordinary. It makes the unseen seem so extraordinary and therefore, not real. That’s why the Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:1 that faith is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
So, there are two scriptural examples that demonstrate why I have a clear choice at this point in time. I can look at this through eyes of flesh and say, “This is all nonsense.” Or, I can look at it through eyes of faith, using my knowledge of God, and say, “This is exactly what I should expect.” The choice for me is easy.
I repurchased shares of TLYS because Mr. Market has become very downtrodden and depressed on the stock all of a sudden. This is in spite of the fact that they just posted a very good quarter. Most retailers did not post very good first quarters. The U.S. economy did not post a good first quarter. But TLYS just posted one with sales up 8.1% year over year, same store sales comps at +2%, and EPS up 150% year over year.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4
